Compostable Foodservice Packaging: A Compliance and Selection Guide
Abstract. Foodservice operators face a patchwork of compostability claims. This guide explains what the major standards actually test, which certification each market recognizes, and how to specify compostable cups, lids, and containers that perform in service and break down as claimed.
1. The standards
ASTM D6400 (U.S.): requires disintegration, biodegradation into CO₂, water, and biomass on a natural-materials timeline, with no toxic residue or excess heavy metals. BPI is the leading North American certifier against it; the BPI mark is what U.S. retailers, municipalities, and composters look for. BioStar's group BPI listing is held by Shaoxing Lvxing New Material Co., Ltd. (BPI company #10529209) and covers five Greenstar-brand bag products: kitchen food waste bags (SKU 11020101), produce bags (11020104), retail merchandise bags (11020106), yard waste bags (11020108), and pet waste bags for Canada (11020109) — verify at the BPI Product Catalog listing.
EN 13432 (Europe): at least 90% disintegration within 12 weeks, full biodegradation within six months, no harm to compost quality; certified products may carry the Seedling logo.
GB/T 19277 (China): the national standard defining test methods and pass criteria behind degradability claims in the domestic market.
2. Why the whole item must be certified
A compostable cup with a conventional plastic lid is not a compostable product. Buyers should require certification for every component — cup, coating, lid, straw, cutlery — and ask whether the claim rests on third-party certification or a supplier's own test report. They are not the same thing.
3. Selection checkpoints for operators
Hot vs. cold service: specify heat tolerance for hot-fill and holding; PLA-coated paper for hot drinks, thermoformed PLA for cold.
Barrier needs: grease and moisture resistance matched to menu (soups, sauces, fried foods).
Composting access: certified compostable items need industrial composting streams; confirm local collection accepts them.
Documentation pack: certificates per SKU and market (ASTM D6400/BPI for North America, EN 13432 for Europe, GB/T 19277 for China) before listing a supplier.
