Starch-Based Foam Packaging — Plant-Based Protective Cushioning

Protective packaging is where fossil foam is hardest to defend: EPS cushioning protects a product for days and persists for centuries. Greenstar, BioStar's U.S. subsidiary, works on the plant-based alternative — starch-based foam packaging materials for cushioning, void fill, and protective inserts.

BioStar's research base is in starch and biopolymer materials: the group's R&D program covers starch-based foaming alongside PLA film, bag, and molded products, and its joint laboratory with Zhejiang University works on biomass valorization and biopolymer productization. That research depth matters in foam, where the trade-offs — cushioning performance, moisture sensitivity, and cost — are decided in formulation, not marketing.

Starch-based foam is aimed at electronics, appliances, and consumer goods shippers that need drop protection without EPS, and at brands replacing plastic loose-fill.
